The Basics of Biking in the City

November 15, 2019 by Jeremy

If you’re looking for a green commute and a way to add more exercise into your daily routine, cycling is an excellent option. Become a true city cyclist by following these basic rules of biking in the city. From following traffic rules to choose the best city bikes, prepare to cut your transportation costs and enjoy a fun way to introduce more physical activity into your everyday routine.

Follow the Pack

Biking may be your way of standing out, but when it comes to safety it’s best to stick with the crowd. It’s good to brush up of your state’s and city’s laws regarding cyclists, but when in doubt simply follow the pack. Fellow bikers are friendly and can assist you in finding a safe route to your work. Check to see the typical habits of fellow bikers. Are they all wearing helmets? Do you need to stay in a bike lane? Be sure you know these rules of the road before hitting the streets.

Watch Your Surroundings

Whether you’re casually riding on your city bike or cruising through traffic with one of the latest hybrid bikes, be sure you keep your eyes and ears attentive to your surroundings. Listening to music might be a fun option for rural rides or pedaling at the gym, but it’s best to reduce any distractions while riding in the city.

Don’t assume a car will stop for you, let you in or any other typical rules that apply to other drivers. Cyclists follow different rules of the road, so be sure you stay safe as you navigate residential side streets and traffic-packed main roads.

Prepare for Any Weather

A sudden thunderstorm may be unpleasant while you’re driving, but it’s downright miserable as a cyclist without proper gear. Bring a rain jacket, hat and other any protection you may need for the climate and season. You can still bike in inclimate weather with the right gear, but being caught unprepared can leave you cold and unhappy.

Pack a Repair Kit

While you’re preparing for the worst, consider a repair kit. Even the best bikes sometimes need a tune-up, and you never know when you’ll experience a flat tire. Just like your car, pack a few must-have repair accessories on your bike. Here are some common tools and equipment for a bike repair kit:

  • Tire pump
  • Tire levers
  • Patch kit
  • Spare tube
  • Bike wrench

A small emergency kit prevents a flat tire from being a disaster and allows you to quickly patch and pump your wheel to get you back on your bike quickly. If you left with some time to spare, you’ll still make it to work on time.

Pick the Right Bike

While nearly any bike will do, there are a few types of bikes that will save you time, effort and frustration when riding in a city. Consider investing in a hybrid bike for fast, convenient and stylish rides all around town. Search for the best women’s bike or men’s hybrid bike to take on the city streets and enjoy a green commute.

My name is Jeremy and I used to be a pretty high-up chef in New York City. I worked at a few high scale restaurants and loved it for many years. But then it began to feel like something was missing. After a short trip to Thailand, I knew what I had to do.

I came back to NYC, gave my work notice, packed up and headed out to the road. Since 2015, I've been backpacking around the world (and eating everything!!!). Thankfully with all the walking I do traveling, I've only gained a few pounds hahaha. Read More…
