4 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Organising an Event

May 6, 2020 by Jeremy

There’s no denying the fact that event planning – be it weddings or corporate affairs – can be an exciting experience. However, they can also be stressful and frustrating propositions too, and leave you with pulling out your hair on more than a few occasions if left tackled lightly. However, this doesn’t always have to be the case. And with a little know-how and some careful planning and preparation beforehand, you can avoid many potentially costly errors. So in an effort to ensure that the project that you’ve been tasked to manage run smoothly, here are common mistakes to avoid when organising an event.

Drinks, Alcohol, Event, Alcoholic Drinks, Beverage

1. Procrastinating or dragging your feet when planning an event

A lot of inexperienced event organisers and planners make the mistake of taking their time only to find out later on that they didn’t have enough because they needed to find alternative catering services or a new venue. So when handling any affair – no matter how small it might seem – don’t procrastinate or drag your feet. In this way, you won’t be pressured to find large houses to rent for weekends in which the event will take place or secure the necessary products or services of the vendors.

2. Not investing time in exploring all avenues

Research may not necessarily be the most exciting part of coordinating an event, but it’s undoubtedly an essential aspect of the process. After all, not only will exploring all avenues allow you to find much more inexpensive options and better deals. But it could help you discover potential alternatives for when your current choices become unavailable. So make sure that you take the time to carefully compare and consider every viable option first. Tedious as it may be, it can save you a lot of time as well as money in the long run.

3. Overlooking potential health issues of your guests

You’ll be surprised at how many event planners overlook the potential health issues of their guests, and it’s critical that you don’t. After all, you’ll need to consider any allergic reactions that they could have on the dishes that you plan to serve on the affair. So make sure that you let all guests know if they have any existing allergies. You’ll save yourself from a lot of trouble in this way.

4. Working without a checklist

With the staggering number of things that need to be accomplished when planning an event, there’s a good chance that you’ll forget more than a few concerns that need to be addressed. And this is where a checklist comes into play. Not only will it let you know what jobs have been completed. But it will also keep you overlooking items that have not been given the attention that it needs.

The success of any event hinges on the mistakes that you are able to avoid during its planning stages. And by taking note of the common pitfalls listed in this article, you’ll be able to keep yourself from making errors and ensure that the process goes smoothly.

My name is Jeremy and I used to be a pretty high-up chef in New York City. I worked at a few high scale restaurants and loved it for many years. But then it began to feel like something was missing. After a short trip to Thailand, I knew what I had to do.

I came back to NYC, gave my work notice, packed up and headed out to the road. Since 2015, I've been backpacking around the world (and eating everything!!!). Thankfully with all the walking I do traveling, I've only gained a few pounds hahaha. Read More…
