Watching all of the Pizza Hut "Pizzone" commercials have made us both hungry for an old family favorite...
Ingredients
1 lb. ground beef (or ground Italian sausage)
1 package white frozen bread loaves (grocer's freezer section)
1 package pre-sliced mozzarella cheese
1 small onion
1 small green bell pepper
1 14 oz. can tomato sauce
1 tsp. garlic flakes
1 ½ tsp. crushed oregano
1 egg, beaten
Preparation
Set out frozen bread loaves to thaw (after removing from package) on a large cookie sheet -- and let them begin to rise in a warm place, approximately 3-5 hours before meal preparation.
Chop onion and green pepper and cook with ground beef. Drain fat. Place mixture in skillet and add tomato sauce, garlic flakes and oregano. Cook on medium-low for 15 minutes. Set aside to cool slightly.
Stretch and flatten each frozen bread loaf's dough. You are going to take the flat dough, add the meat-mixture and cheese down the center, bring up the sides of the flat dough to the top-center forming "U" shape, pinch the top of the "U" tight to seal along a seam, and then bring up the ends of the tube over the top and seal as well. This will make a "tube" for each loaf (bread on the outside and meat-mixture and cheese on the inside as filling).
After you spread the meat-mixture along the length of the flattened-out dough, top with the mozzarella slices -- or grated mozzarella if slices are not available. After each tube is sealed (see above), cut 3 small slits horizontally on the top, and then brush the dough with the beaten egg so it will brown.
Bake in preheated oven at 325 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Serves 4-6.
You can also add pepperoni, mushrooms, or other "pizza" ingredients of your choice.
